Why do we Learn Science?

Monday, January 21, 2008

If we did not learn science we would have no understanding of our world. We could like Madalyn said, "...know why it works rather than just accept that it does work, we could apply the same principle to other substances." I remember hearing once that we learn science because it is a method, process, procedure, and system used to study the physical world. If you can see, feel, hear, taste, smell or measure something, science will investigate. Also science doesn't have feelings or opinions. If you can support something with facts than you are using science. The scientific method and problem solving is used a lot in our daily lives. We may not solve problems step by step the way the scientific method says to, but we use ideas behind it like the concept of problem solving which we all should have learned in science class. Science isn't just black and white like English and math. Those subjects have specific steps and rules, but you can usually learn a lot more in science since it is more abstract and you learn more of the how and why instead of just accepting things the way they are. You end up learning more in the long run this way.

Chelsey, I was interested in your comment, "science isn't just black and white like English or Math." How is English black and white? I would have thought that English would all be gray. I like your response to the idea that science is about learning the how and why but what for? Can people live a long and successful life without understanding the process of ionic bonding? Maybe this isn't the best class to ask this question, most of you love to learn new things but what about those that don't have the same motivation?

I agree with you about science not having as many specific rules and steps as other classes. In science you can branch out more and really look into how things work. Good post!

I agree with Mr.Voight about english not being black and white but I am not sure that I agree with you that science is not black and white. If science isn't opinions, it is facts, than wouldn't it be black and right since there is a right and wrong?

I like how you defined science sayine to know why it works rather than just accept that it does work. You said "...Those subjects have specific steps and rules" but doesn't science, too? You just wrote above that, saying that it is a method, process, procedure and system. Don't these have specific steps and rules. Otherwise, I liked the way you have said that science is helped by the concept of problem solving. That makes a lot of sense, since science is figuring out why things happen.

I think some parts of science are black and white (like chemical compounds) but other parts are free to use your imagination (like space and technology.) I like your blog a lot.

I actually think science had more exact rules and steps more than english, maybe not math. but it does give you much more freedom in how and what you learn.
