What Causes Change?

Monday, January 7, 2008

From the start (even before kyle copy cat) I thought it's just simply time that causes change. I thought this for a few reasons. First of all as time goes on change occurs everywhere in the universe. For example a tree in nature changes over time. It grows or dies or in some way it does change. If time were to stop nothing could change because everything would remain the same. If no time passes or time stops a tree cannot possibly change. For example it cannot grow or die or lose leaves (etc.). If time stopped nothing could or would happen therefore nothing can change. Before this made so much sense but then thought maybe that's not right. Maybe change occurs as a result of time or change just simply happens over time but it's not the what it's the why. I wasn't really answering the question. I may have realized why change happens but I did not address what causes change. Change may just be something inevitable that is caused by time.
I don't have any references or anything yet and I'll have to think about this some more but here are just some ideas (esp. for people who think time causes change).

I like your idea a lot and think that time is a big factor in change, but what if you just let time go by, would everything still change the same way?

Yes, time, I think, alone does not change things. Take a diamond for example. Put it in a sector of space without radiation, light, solar wind or anything. Also, where there,s no gravity pulling it or heat pushing it. It would do nothing. It would not move, expand, contract, erode, reflect light, or anything. But time would go by. Time alone would not change it.

time does cause change. i agree on that. but i also think that change can be caused by things other than time. just an idea.

i absolutely stand by what you said because for example the experiment that was shown in class a few days ago had taken some time for the mixed acid and sugar to turn color and grow into that huge carbon thingy. but i guess when i think about if we froze time and were still watching the beaker i suppose changes could have been happening that were too small to see. i really think this question is a broad topic.

I think that the fact that time causes change is great. I mean after all some changes are inevitable. But does time change EVERYTHING? I mean, like, [mhm. i put like in a comment. :) ] is every change cause by time? I hope that makes sense. Anyway, you definately made an excellent point.
